Swedish plant-based milk brand Oatly has launched in New Zealand, according to a report from Inside FMCG.
The company is entering the market through a partnership with FMCG brand specialist Acorn, who will serve as Oatly’s sold sales agent and distributor in New Zealand supermarkets. The manufacturer’s Barista range will be the first to hit the shelves.
Oatly was recently the subject of a lawsuit alleging the company had used greenwashing in its promotional strategies, which the lawsuit claimed led to “artificial” inflation of its share prices. The company agreed to a $9.25 million settlement in the case.
Oatly’s move into NZ is the latest investment in the country’s plant-based milk market by a global brand – last month, oat milk brand Otis announced it had brought production back from Sweden to its native New Zealand.
According to data from Circana & Nielsen, New Zealanders are drinking more oat milk than in the past, with the drink making up 41 percent of plant based milk sales in New Zealand, compared to almond milk at 27.3 percent, soy milk 23 percent, and coconut milk at five percent.
