The Secretary-General for the Global Alliance for a Sustainable Planet will be the keynote speaker at the AltProteins 24 conference in Melbourne this October, according to alt proteins think tank and event organiser Food Frontier.
Satya Tripathi has served with the UN for more than two decades in key positions across the globe and was most recently the UN Assistant Secretary-General, Head of New York Office at UN Environment and Secretary of the UN Environment Management Group.
Food Frontier said Mr Tripathi’s presentation will shed light on the urgent need for collaborative action to find sustainable and innovative solutions for global food systems.
Late last year, the UN officially endorsed alt proteins such as plant-based or cultivated meats and proteins produced by precision fermentation as a means to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) generated by the global food system.
The AltProteins 24 conference will feature more than 40 speakers from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Brazil, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, The Netherlands, USA, and Germany.
With a focus on building sustainable food systems, the conference will also feature a debate on catalysing food as a central climate change issue, showcasing some of the most impactful initiatives that are driving industry growth.
The Victorian Government—through support from Agriculture Victoria, Global Victoria and Invest Victoria—is the lead sponsor of AltProteins 24. Global Victoria will lead an interactive workshop on entering international markets, with a focus on the APAC region.
Attracting 400 industry attendees, last year’s conference cast a light on a wide array of trends and challenges in the Australian alt protein market. Those included the rise of the ‘conscious consumer’ and Australia’s progress in regulating cellular agriculture products such as cultivated meat.
Food Frontier CEO Dr Simon Eassom said, “Now in its third year, AltProteins 24 will tackle the challenges and opportunities in the alternative protein sector across the breadth of the plant-based meat, cell cultivation, and precision fermentation industries.
“We are excited to welcome a diverse array of international speakers to Australia, including Satya Tripathi. Alternative proteins are essential for meeting the rising demand for low-emissions protein sources whilst addressing the requirements of an increasing global population. Australia, New Zealand, and Asia are uniquely positioned to meet this demand.”
Agriculture Victoria Deputy Secretary Beth Jones commended Food Frontier for organising an exciting program on an important topic. She said, “As the world demand for protein increases and consumers explore new protein sources, Victorian producers and businesses can capitalise and forge their own path in the alternative protein sector.
“Through the AltProteins Conference, Food Frontier is leading the way when it comes to educating Australians on the opportunities the industry presents, and we are proud to support the conference in 2024.”
Food Frontier’s AltProteins 24 will be held on Thursday 10 October at Sofitel on Collins in Melbourne.
