Australian plant-based meat brand Plantein is launching a new line of products into Woolworths.
Products in the new range – which the company describes as an affordable plant-based alt-meat option — are all priced at $2.95 RRP, and include burgers, mince, and meatballs.
Plantein says the product line allows consumers to replace meat with a nutritious plant-based option that is less expensive but more flavourful. It also says it is aiming to bridge the gap between conventional meat-based recipes and rising living costs.
The company says the products contain B vitamins and minerals such as iron, fibre, and zinc and all come in recyclable packaging.
Sales of plant-based meat in Australia increased by 47% between 2020 and 2023, according to alternative protein think tank Food Frontier. Food Frontier notes that despite inflationary pressures, plant-based meat products in Australia have also edged closer to price parity with conventional meat products, with the average price premium for plant-based meats having dropped from 49% in 2020 to 33% in 2023.
However, the think tank says that while plant-based meats saw increasing traction in foodservice, growth in the retail market stalled, with sales even experiencing a slight contraction (-1% CAGR) from 2020.
