The 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai has already been underway for nearly a week.

Food companies form alliance to combat methane from dairy industry

Global food manufacturers the Bel Group, Danone, General Mills, Kraft Heinz, Lactalis USA, and Nestlé in partnership with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) announced the launch of the Dairy Methane Action Alliance. EDF said that each of the companies in the alliance will transparently account for and publicly disclose the total methane emissions associated with their dairy supply chains as well as pledge to create a public methane action plan by the end of 2024.

The Plant-Based Treaty released a report calling for action to transform the global food system into a future carbon sink and fundamental agent in regenerating and strengthening our biosphere’s innate resilience. The plan draws on the Treaty’s 40 detailed proposals with regard to freezing the expansion of animal agriculture, promoting a shift towards plant-based diets, and restoring and rewilding ecosystems. 

WTO and FAO sign MoU on trade, food, and climate change

The WTO and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) signed an MoU focused on boosting cooperation on a range of issues in the areas of food, agricultural trade and climate change. The MoU also calls for both organizations to help developing economies increase their food safety and animal and plant health capacity.

UAE launches Food Innovation Hub  to strengthen food systems

The launch of the Food Innovation Hub in the UAE will seek to strengthen food systems by increasing accessibility to more affordable, more nutritious, and more sustainable foods. The UAE will be the sixth hub launched by World Economy Forum (WEF) to unite stakeholders under the farm-to-fork concept.

Global Cellular Agriculture Alliance to co-host Food System Pavilion

The Global Cellular Agriculture Alliance will co-host the COP28 Food System Pavilion from 9 to 11 December. This will include a day of panels on Saturday, December 9th 2023 focused on the role protein diversification can play in building more resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems.

One of the panels will be hosted by CEO and founder of Australian precision fermentation company Change Foods, Dave Bucca on 10 December. Bucca himself will speak on the importance of precision fermentation in combating climate change.
