Some of the best minds in Australia’s alternative protein sector will take the stage at the upcoming R&D Deep Dive event, co-hosted by Future Alternative and the University of Sydney’s Alt Protein CRC.

The conference will take place on 15 November (postponed from 26 July due to COVID-19 concern) at the University of Sydney, and will closely examine the R&D landscape in Australia’s alternative protein sector, including plant-based proteins, precision fermentation and cell-based technologies.

Future-Proofing Alt Protein: a R&D Deep Dive will include a series of presentations and panel discussions, with a number of networking opportunities throughout the day.

Michelle Colgrave, head of the CSIRO’s Future Protein Mission, will take the stage to shed light on the agency’s research capabilities, both now and in the future.

She’ll also contribute to a panel discussion titled What Makes a Good Collaboration?, where she’ll be accompanied by Professor Fariba Dehghani and Fern Ho.

Professor Fariba Dehghani is Director of the Centre for Advanced Food Engineering at the University of Sydney, and, in addition to her panel discussion, Dehghani will also present on Food Engineering in the Future.

Fern Ho is co-founder of Australian/US start-up, The Leaf Protein Co, which is harnessing the power of Rubisco, a plant protein found in leafy green plants, to provide an alternative to the far more widespread soy- and wheat-based protein sources.

The Leaf Protein Co has worked closely with the CSIRO since its establishment in 2020, and on 14 October Ho will present a discussion on Working with Research Providers.

Joining us from across The Ditch will be Glen Neal, general manager of risk management and intelligence at Food Standards Australia and New Zealand. Neal will discuss The Regulatory Framework for Novel Foods, giving manufacturers insight into the processes and requirements involved in bringing a new protein ingredients to market.

He’ll be followed by Anneline Padayachee, one of Australia’s leading science communicators, nutritionists and contributors to nutrition research, who will present on Nutritional Research for Alt Proteins.

The full program for Future-Proofing Alt Proteins: a R&D Deep Dive, will be released shortly. To summarise, confirmed topics and speakers include:

  • Understanding CSIRO research capabilities – now and into the future – Michelle Colgrave
  • Food Engineering for the Future – Professor Fariba Dehghani
  • Working with Research Providers – Fern Ho
  • What Makes a Good Collaboration (panel) – Professor Fariba Dehghani; Michelle Colgrave; Fern Ho
